、 screw gauges. The end face of thethreaded portion is pressed against a step in the gauge(tolerance step),and the limits of size of the thread atthe gauge plane are determined, disregarding dimensions a and b(since these dimensions may be taken astheoretically exact).Normally, thread diameters are meas

、ured at the gauge plane. However,in order to detect any crowning of thethread, the thread dimensions may be checked at the reference plane(or any other plane along the useful threadlength).Gauges should be selected according to the thread parameters that are being checked. For instance, taperscrew ring

、gauges are suitable when checking all thread parameters, whereas parallel screw ring gauges areadequate when only the function of the thread is being checked. In both cases, however, the width of the gaugering has to be adjusted for the thread design(standard or short). The ring is then screwed on the wo

、rkpiece andthe distance between the end faces of the workpiece and gauge is established. When the ring gauge is providedwith a step face, the end face of the workpiece thread is not to protrude beyond this step.(DIN 158-2 specifiesparallel ring gauges with tolerance steps,in accordance with ISO 1502.)

、Although the incomplete thread of parallel ring gauges must be removed, this may influence the inspectionresults. For this reason, such gauges are to be regularly checked for wear using taper screw check plugs.Since gauging and measuring threads may lead to different results, there is a risk of rejectio

、n in marginal cases. It is therefore recommended that manufacturers and their clients agree on the method to be used.Where noagreement has been made, results of gauging in accordance with DIN 158-2 shall be decisive.Explanatory notesThis standard specifies taper external threads with a basic taper of

、1:16 and a thread profile that is perpen-dicular to the thread axis.It is more economical to mate taper external threads with the parallel internal threadsspecified here rather than with taper internal threads,as the former are easier to manufacture. To cater for thin-walled components that require s

、hort thread lengths,a short design of taper external threadhas been specified along with the standard design. The nominal sizes given in table 2 are based on the assumption that the dimensions lie perpendicular to thethread axis at the reference or gauge plane. The limit deviations for the thread diameters have been calculatedfrom the following formula:Ag=tAa C,where C=1:16,i.e.whereAgis the thread diameter;Aais the deviation for dimensions a or b;Cis the taper.AAga=16Page 10DIN 158-1:1997-06Als Papierkopie-kein nderungsdienst/Printed copy-no alert service
