3、 in the 1950 s destroyed the formal town square and its system of edges,paths,and central fountain enshrouded in trees.To reclaim the park and locate new active destinations such as the Levitt Pavilion,existing transportation functions must be reorganized and the park re-stitched together.Our approa

4、ch weaves the light rail into the fabric of the park,allowing other community features to occupy the historic center.This strategic approach allows the park to again become the vital heart of the neighborhood and source of energy for downtown revitalization.Our design strategies focus on park activa

5、tion,connections within and around the park,and a celebration of community and history to reimagine the park as a favorite destination for the residents of San Jos.Through dynamic programming that honors the park s history and restores its center,our design reinforces a compelling vision for a vibra

10、t.James Park provide accessibility from all four corners,a consistent meandering path around the park,and safe Light Rail crossing.The play features encourage exploration,physical challenges and educational opportunities to a wide age range.A consistent path around the park offers play in the form o

11、f physical activity and historical interpretation.Water is used creatively in the park to delight,guide circulation and create a solemn experience.A tranquil reflecting pool surrounds the Kennedy memorial.Water buffers the light rail tracks and creates beautiful effects.In the play area,mist and str

12、eams of water delight children at play.The planting design organizes a Mediterranean biome with a South American and Mediterranean planting zone on the east side.This is complemented by a San Jos Mission style zone,and a Victorian Strolling Garden that recalls the early 1800s,when the park showcased

18、otanical gardens filled with both California-native and climate-appropriate species;the abundantly programmed play area for San Jos s youngest citizens;the peaceful,passive openness of verdant lawns;and the culturally-driven and finely detailed paving patterns.It is exemplary in its design intention

23、rk to be successful in its future,it will need to foster constant activation.One Park is designed to offer a variety of spaces that vary in scale,shade and furnishing in order to accommodate a range of events.Unlike past designs for the park that put a landscape feature in the center,One Park has al

24、lowed for a flexible central gathering space for neighbors,visitors,and the city as a whole to gather.While current programming such as yoga in the park and poetry readings will continue to serve park users,reclaiming the center of St.James Park allows for larger scale events like concerts in the Le

27、lear entryway,a portal into the park with different user experiences.Within the park,connecting from one side to the other is made easier with visual cues and distinct crossings at the Light Rail Transit.Park circulation is reinforced with a consistent meander around the edges where one can journey

37、 CompetitionACTIVATE A PLACE FOR EVERYONE:FLEXIBLE AND DIVERSE PROGRAMS AND OPPORTUNITIESTo maintain a high level of activity in the park,it must become an attraction for local neighbors as well as residents from throughout the region.Facilities should be flexible enough to serve both audiences.For

38、example,the Levitt Pavilion will become a premier venue for music lovers.However programming is seasonal and gaps will naturally occur in the regular schedule.The pavilion must also serve other functions such as movies,World Cup Soccer,and markets and the space be designed to support a full range of

45、s Historic District,the park is a critical component of the public realm.Nowhere is this more important than the seam between the park and its surroundings the perimeter.This is comprised of city sidewalks,street trees,and the interior of the park as viewed from vantage points around the edges.Our a

46、pproach activates those edges with strolling gardens,widened sidewalks,shaded canopy trees,portals,and deep views to imaginative destinations within.On St.John Street,the caf energizes the edge with its outdoor setting complete with bocce,lounge seating,and fire pits.On St.James,the sidewalk merges

47、with the park path for a while,blurring the line between street edge and park and reinforcing the connection to the historic district.New Venue,New Story-Levitt Pavilion is repositioning the HistoryBeyond the St.James park-Activating The Urban Edge2425WRT|St.James Park Design CompetitionCentral to t

48、he success of the park is how it connects to the urban district.In the literal sense,this means the park is inviting and easily accessed from all corners.The design retains historic connections from the corners as portals into the park.Street edges are activated with historic memorials,recreational

49、amenities,botanical planting,and paths to the park interior.Other connections are programmed based.New development around the park perimeter will bring safety benefits of“eyes on the park”and complimentary uses that activate the ground floor sidewalk frontage.The outdoor space of the new family cour
